“Mariposa” by Maurizio Forcella, 2023

“Mariposa,” directed by Maurizio Forcella, tells a sweet and humorous story of friendship and deep affection set in Atri in 1985, during the historic visit of Pope John Paul II. The protagonist, Fernando, a lively and sensitive twelve-year-old, pretends to be sick to avoid family obligations linked to the papal visit. His true motivation, however, is to see his dear friend Silvia, who is ill and confined to her home. Determined to reach her, Fernando embarks on a small adventure filled with clever tricks and innocent lies, accompanied by an unlikely travel companion. In this tender short film, themes of friendship, illness, and courage intertwine against the backdrop of a unique historical moment.
“Mariposa” is made with a skillful blend of fiction and archival materials sourced from RAI and private citizens, which lend authenticity to the narrative. The soundtrack, composed by Gianluigi Antonelli alongside the artist Setak, enhances the film’s sense of joy and intimacy, enveloping the audience in an atmosphere of sweet wonder.
The film captures the essence of 1980s Italy, weaving personal narratives with historical memory while showcasing the beauty of the small-town Atri. The result is a charming and moving road movie that captures the audiences through its humor and genuine emotion.
Produced in 2023 and distributed by Pathos Distribution, Mariposa has won awards in various film festivals, including Best Short Film at the Giffoni Film Festival, as well as Best Film and Best Cinematography at the international competition Cinema without Borders, organized annually by UNICA – Union International du Cinéma. The triumph of Mariposa at the 2024 edition held in Poznań, Poland, marked a significant milestone for Italy, representing its first national victory in the Best Film category since the festival’s inception.
